LEED® Green Building Certification

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011

The Beech-Nut Nutrition Corporation announced today that its new Amsterdam facility, which serves as the company’s headquarters and production plant, has been awarded LEED® Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI). LEED is the nation’s preeminent program for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings.

“I am proud that we in the Assembly, with my former colleague and now-Congressman Paul Tonko, made a forceful commitment to help Beech-Nut remain viable and competitive in the world market and create and retain jobs for upstate New York. For its more than 100 year history, Beech-Nut has been known for making some of the finest food products in the world, and now it also will be known for producing its product line in the most environmentally friendly and responsible manufacturing facility possible.  The company’s strong commitment to LEED building technology will serve to reinforce its permanent presence in this community,” said Speaker Sheldon Silver.

Senate Majority Leader Dean G. Skelos said, “With this LEED certification, the new Beech-Nut facility will serve as a model for other businesses in the region interested in constructing or upgrading their facilities in an economical and environmentally friendly way. I commend them on the implementation of features that will conserve water, save energy, and create a healthier workplace for employees.”

“Beech-Nut has shown that energy efficiency can be our fuel of choice,” said Congressman Paul Tonko. “Achieving LEED certification, they have found simple ways to save energy, lower costs, create jobs and improve our local environment. They have shown that manufacturers can make it inAmerica, by investing in smarter and more efficient outcomes.”

“We commend Beech-Nut for achieving LEED Certification for a their new plant that reduces the use of energy, materials and natural resources and also results in lower greenhouse gases and a smaller carbon footprint,” said Joe Martens, Commissioner, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.  “Our pre-planning dialogue with Beechnut enabled us to issue all required permits within ten months while assuring the highest standards for environmental protection, and, the creation of a twenty-seven acre open space habitat for the Short Eared Owl and Northern Harrier, a state protected species.

“Congratulations to Beech-Nut for achieving LEED certification,” said Francis J. Murray Jr., President and CEO of NYSERDA. “I’m proud that participation in NYSERDA’s New Construction Program helped the company reach this milestone. NYSERDA provided $460,000 in energy efficiency incentives, which helped defray the cost of a high efficiency building envelope, low-E insulating glass, high efficiency lighting, occupancy sensors, daylighting controls, HE steam boilers, premium efficiency motors and packaged VAV units at Beech-Nut’s state-of-the-art infant food production facility. Projects like this one help us keep jobs inNew YorkStatewhile providing energy efficiency savings.”

“This is a wonderful development for Beech-Nut and our community,” said State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I -Schenectady). “I was truly impressed with the facility when I toured it, and as a ‘green’ facility the company is operating in a manner that is energy-efficient and friendly to theMontgomeryCountyenvironment. By receiving LEED certification, Beech-Nut is well-positioned for the future, helping the company continue to be a strong business leader and employer in theMohawkValley.  This facility will also serve as a model for future economic development in this State.”

“As we look for ways to generate more energy, the best place to start is with conserving the resources we already have,” said New York State Assemblyman George Amedore. “Obtaining LEED certification on such a large scale is a win-win for our environment, as well as the long-term cost savings for Beech-Nut. Smarter building designs make good business and environmental sense and I commend Beech-Nut for looking toward the future.”

“We are extremely grateful for the support of New York State in our efforts to build the first infant food manufacturing facility in the world to receive LEED certification,” said Jim Schneider, President and CEO of Beech-Nut.  “The collaboration and assistance from Empire State Development Corporation, New York State Energy Research and Development Authority and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation as well as former Assembly member Paul Tonko has made today’s announcement a reality.”

Beech-Nut’s $124 million Amsterdam, NY facility, which opened in June 2010, was designed to achieve LEED certification for energy use, lighting, water and material use. Facility features and highlights include:

  • Annual energy savings equal to the energy demands of more than 2,000 people.
  • Water conservation equal to what a city of 10,000 people would consume.
  • Reduction in waste water discharge equal to the discharge of 10,000 people.
  • Open floor plan that allows natural light to flow through the building.
  • Maintenance-free landscaping that thrives in the local environment.

“As a family-owned company, Beech-Nut’s priorities and investments reflect our values. By using less energy and water, Beech-Nut is able to save resources for families, businesses and taxpayers; reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and contribute to a healthier environment for residents, workers and the community, for future generations,” Schneider concluded.
