The Chamber’s new information center has information about Montgomery County and the surrounding area available for local businesses and residents, as well as guests to the Montgomery County area.

The Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that they have received approval from the NYS Thruway Authority to include a designated Information Center in their new location, Memorial Day through Labor Day, 2010.

The offices will now be open 7 days per week during the summer season to assist travelers off of the NYS Thruway that are seeking information. The location will be marked with the official information symbol “?” for travelers on the Thruway. Seeking this designation was one of the Chamber’s goals when moving to their new location at Riverfront Center. The premise of this initiative is to bring more people into the Chamber’s doors seeking information. When more people enter the area seeking information, it offers more opportunities to promote the area’s attractions, lodging facilities, and businesses. This will be the second tourism information center in Montgomery County; a tourism booth is in Canajoharie as well.

“This is great news for the chamber and Montgomery County,” states Chairman of the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors, Vito Greco. “Opportunities to attract more people into the area, especially during these challenging economic times, are needed. We need as much tourism and people within our county as possible to stimulate the economy. I applaud the Chamber for pursuing this initiative.

The information centers are located in The Chamber office, 1166 Riverfront Center, Amsterdam and the Canajoharie Information Booth, downtown Canajoharie across from NBT Bank. Information on Montgomery County attractions and the surrounding area is available at both locations. “The booths are staffed with knowledgeable, community minded individuals and stocked with information about Montgomery County attractions, lodging facilities, events, maps and other information visitors are looking for,” states Gina DaBiere-Gibbs, Tourism Director. “The Canajoharie Information Booth has been a popular stop for travelers; we continuously assist visitors from around the world each season. The additional information center at the Chamber office has already seen increased foot traffic since our relocation to the Riverfront Center in the beginning of May.”

Stop into either center for a free copy of the 2010 Montgomery County Spring/Summer Event Calendar. “Business throughout Montgomery County should have these calendars available in their lobby areas. I encourage everyone reading this article to become Ambassadors of the community and learn everything they can about what our area has to offer. We need to continue to put our best foot forward for visitors and residents, being knowledgeable correlates with good customer service,” states Chamber President, Deborah Auspelmyer. “I encourage everyone to add www.visitmontgomerycountyny.com to their favorites so updated tourism information is continually at your fingertips. Highlights are also posted on the Visit Montgomery County Facebook page; fan us by searching Visit Montgomery County.” For more tourism information call DaBiere-Gibbs at 842-8200 ext. 12.

Chamber Recaps Customer Service Seminar

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Amsterdam…

Gayle Smith, AAA Northway, presents You are an Ambassador

Gayle Smith, AAA Northway, presents You are an Ambassador

The Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce tourism department recently held a complimentary customer service training seminar with hospitality experts including:  Leesa Perazzo, Director of Workforce Development and Public Affairs for the Chamber of Schenectady County, Tracey Caponera, Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Bachelor Degree programs for SUNY Delhi at their satellite campus at Schenectady Community College, and Gayle Smith the Division Manager of Human Resources for AAA Northway.

Ms. Perazzo focused on the Back to Basics of Customer Service, simple reminders to everyone involved in customer service.  She touched upon the following points: be emotionally present for people, make eye contact and acknowledgement, reach out on behalf of your busy colleague, be aware of both internal and external customers, poor services equals frustration for you and the customer, be sincere and respectful, strive for consistency, and give them a “wow” factor.  She stressed that choosing your attitude and taking responsibility are key components of customer service.  “You choose how to respond to what life throws at you.  More importantly, your choice impacts everyone around you.  Have the guts to ask yourself and care about the answer, ‘Is my attitude helping my team or my customers? Is it helping me to be the person I want to be?’,” explained Leesa.

Ms. Caponera presented Above and Beyond, Taking Guest Service to the Next Level.  Tracey stated, “Everyone has a chance to make a difference in someone else’s life everyday.”  Great service requires that everyone see the vision; it is company culture.  Your company should sit down as a team and brainstorm ideas to implement your service ideas, use out of the box thinking and cross-train whenever possible.  Great customer service doesn’t have to be costly or extravagant: use warm, sincere greetings and goodbyes with your customers’ names, anticipate and fulfill your customers’ needs, use appropriate humor, be engaging, focus on your “internal” customer.  Never use the phrase, “it’s not my job”.  If you don’t have the skill set to answer the question or help, help however possible and find someone else who can fulfill the task.

Ms. Smith followed with You are an Ambassador explaining why it is important to know your community.  Whether you are in your backyard at a barbeque or shopping at the grocery store, you are an ambassador for where you live and work.  Ambassadors know their business and local area, understand how to act or react if approached outside of their normal workday, create trust in their attentiveness, responsiveness, and actions, promote value by knowing as much as possible (but not necessarily everything) about your business and your local area and sharing it willingly and enthusiastically, develop relationships which lead to customer and visitor loyalty, and have an ownership mentality.

Each panelist reiterated that customer service is a choice; react positively even to the negative.  Leesa stated, “Criticism is the best gift.  The customer’s perception is their reality.”  Listen, allow the person to vent, don’t interrupt, show empathy, don’t be defensive, don’t argue, acknowledge the bad experience.  Wherever you go, whatever you do, you can promote and strengthen your business’s and local area’s image by speaking positively, willingly, and enthusiastically.

The Chamber recognizes the value and importance of customer service for our members and our community.  We are considering offering this seminar again this fall and would like anyone interested in sending their staff to please contact Gina DaBiere-Gibbs, Tourism Director, at 518-842-8200.  We also want to thank Leesa, Tracey and Gayle for their time and assistance with this seminar.

The seminar is not limited to attractions, restaurants, and lodging facilities; we encourage representatives from gas stations, convenient stores, and retail stores to participate. These front line associates are the ambassadors to our County receiving the infamous questions, “what is there to do here and where is there to eat?” If you have answered those questions you are invited to attend.”

The training seminar will host a panel of tourism industry leaders featuring Leesa Perazzo, Director of Workforce Development and Public Affairs for the Chamber of Schenectady County, Tracey Caponera, Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Bachelor Degree programs for SUNY Delhi at their satellite campus at Schenectady Community College, and Gayle Smith the Division Manager of Human Resources for AAA Northway.

In the early to mid 90s she was the sole owner of Leesa’s Restaurant, a dinner and jazz club on upper State Street in Schenectady.

Tracey Caponera holds a Master’s Degree in Service Management from Rochester Institute of Technology, as well as being certified in Hospitality Sales through Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International. She has extensive background in hospitality operations and sales with Hyatt Hotels, Marriott, Sheraton and independent hotels such as the Albany Desmond, the Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa in Lake Placid. Tracey served for five years as a senior faculty member and director of internship programs at a leading hotel and culinary college where she specialized in curriculum development. Gayle Smith will be presenting on the importance of knowing your community. She has responsibility for six offices and over 100 employees who provide customer service to AAA Northway’s 144,000 members in ten counties in upstate New York. Her responsibilities include ensuring that customer service training is provided to call center and frontline staff, as well as monitoring the quality of customer service delivery. A seasoned professional in the human resources and training field, she has experience in travel, manufacturing, hospitality and, through her work with a Professional Employer Organization, a myriad of other industries. She is a member of the Capital Region Human Resources Association, the Society of Human Resources Management and has attained certification as a Senior Human Resources Professional through the Human Resources Certification Institute. She is an active member of the Steering Committee of the Department of Labor’s Job Service-Employer Committee.

The seminar takes place during National Tourism Week, May 8 through 16. The goal of National Tourism Week is to enhance the economy, security and perception, and recognize the cultural and social benefits created by travel and tourism.

This complimentary seminar is open to the public, but space is limited to 25 people. For more information and to RSVP by May 10 call DaBiere-Gibbs at 842-8200 ext. 12. The Chamber office is located at 1166 Riverfront Center, Lower Level next to Assemblyman Amedore’s office, Amsterdam.
